"Last year I set my goal to qualify for the world triathlon age group championships in Auckland which I achieved. Unfortunately when I got there the enormity of the competition and the expectation was too much for me and I didn't perform anywhere near my best, finishing 54th. So as part of my winter work I worked with Andy Hooton. We addressed a lot of psychological issues in the sessions, including rationalising thought processes, working on pre-race preparations and generally controlling my emotions prior to a race. This became part of my training as it is something which you have to work at alongside the fitness element of the sport. I have recently competed in the world championships in London and finished 24th which is a major improvement. I consider the work I did with Andy to be a major part of my improvement."
Pete Shuttleworth, Chesterfield. Elite triathlete - 2013
“The process gave me clarity and optimism, by realigning my goals to ensure that I would psychologically reward myself on a regular basis. It also took pressure off me breaking recovery into manageable chunks. Just having chance to vent my frustration onto someone who understood and was prepared to listen was very helpful. You have excellent interpersonal skills which put me at ease from the very beginning. You also looked into things that could be critical very quickly, and had a highly adaptive approach, underpinned by a very good structure of enquiry. Your help was very much appreciated and had a massive difference in both my recovery from injury and also my general happiness.”
Duncan Longson, Sheffield. Hockey player recovering from injury.
“I found the experience to be quite refreshing both in terms of listening to myself talking about my training and realising the barriers I had in my mind in terms of entering the competitive arena again.”
Elite Cyclist, Huddersfield. Coming out of retirement to enter veteran competitions.
“We had several group sessions with Andy throughout the season during which we focussed on specific issues drawn out by Andy during various group and individual consultations. We not only achieved our highest league placement but also won the National Championship trophy. We came back from 3-0 down at half time to win and become National Champions for the first time. A large part of that success is down to Andy’s consultancy.”
Lewis Butcher, Coach, Sheffield Hallam Civica, Men’s 2nd XI Hockey
“I was having trouble specifically with my putting. If I had a bad shot it would throw my entire game. I had a couple of sessions with Andy and he gave me certain strategies to use both for focussing on the putting technique itself and also how to cope following a bad shot. My game has improved massively and I have been in the top three of five amateur competitions in the past month.”
